I saw a segment on Top Gear for the Australian ute - Maloo. Yes, the Maloo link is from 2004, but it's a good description and it shows these puppies have been around for a bit. I love the trees in picture above. It kind of looks like what Gandalf would drive if his horse was in the shop and he needed to load up fire works. A 2008 review gave it 4 out of 5 wombats.
